FAQs

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are dilated veins characterized by preventing blood from flowing back to the heart. Even though varicose veins can appear on any part of the body, this disease usually affects the veins on the leg.

What is their cause?

Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of the venous valves of the legs which, if not properly closed, lead to the accumulation of blood in the veins making them swell and cause a hemorrhage. With time, this leads to stagnation that directly translates in the appearance of varicose veins in our legs.

How can you get them?

Besides heredity, there are many factors that can provoke and promote the appearance and growth of varicose veins. The main ones are obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and prolonged standing.

What are their symptoms?

The symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Burning sensation on your feet and around the ankles
  • Grayish-brown discoloration of the ankles / calves
  • Visible swollen veins under the skin of the legs
  • Tiredness and heaviness on the legs
  • Itching and even a strong pain
  • Ulcers on the skin of the ankles
  • Swelling of ankles and feet
  • Night cramps
  • Tingling sensation
  • Fatigue

*You must see your doctor if you have experienced any of these symptoms.

What kind of treatments are there?

There are many products available in the market today, from the new, successful natural products that were the last ones to join the list with a high level of acceptance among the consumers because of their great effectiveness, to surgery (including endolaser) and sclerotherapy.

What are surgical procedures all about?

Just like any other surgical procedure it implies entering the operating room, with all the risks this entails. It is usually practiced on patients with varicose veins at an advanced stage (sometimes, according to each case, this treatment needs to be complemented with sclerotherapy for lower sized varicose veins). The surgery involves the elimination of the dilated veins through little incisions of no more than 2 millimeters made with a phlebectomy hook inserted under the skin surface to remove the varicose vein. The recovery period, as in all treatments, is indicated by the physician and depends on the characteristics of the treated varicose veins, but it is necessary to use graduated compression stockings for approximately two to three weeks after surgery.

What about laser?

It is usually performed under local anesthesia and involves inserting a fiberoptic catheter (a tube of 3 mm) inside the affected vein, which closes as a consequence of the heat released by the laser. For this kind of varicose veins, transcutaneous laser is contraindicated since the amount of heat needed to remove them would burned skin. Due to its characteristics, this treatment is appropriate for people with recurrent varicose veins, patients with clotting problems and older people or with a specific medical history that would not allow rather long walks. The surgery takes an average of 30-45 minutes. Once finished, a pressure bandage or elastic stocking is placed to compress the operated areas.

How many surgical procedures are there? What is the difference between them?

There are different surgical procedures to eliminate varicose veins, but all of them involve the radical suppression of the damaged superficial venous network through the removal of the higher number possible of varicose veins.
