Preventive treatments

Some alternative procedures to treat varicose veins do not require surgery, and even though they are not effective enough on their own, they do contribute to fight the development of some diseases. In the case of varicose veins, these therapies can be used to alleviate the symptoms or discomfort associated to this disease, or to improve the unattractive aspect. The most important preventive treatments and therapeutic measures are the following:

Phlebitis drugs: These are drugs that contribute with microcirculation improving the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency. These drugs must be prescribed by a physician.

Elastic stockings: Compression elastic stockings are indicated for all stages of chronic venous insufficiency and for the prevention of varicose veins appearing during pregnancy. They act to avoid venous stasis on the varicose veins while improving the venous return. We do not recommend using the stockings without medical prescription.

Natural preventive treatments:

There are different types of laser

Exercise: To alleviate discomfort and improve circulation, taking long walks is highly recommended (avoid driving. Try to walk everywhere and use the stairs, which is a good exercise for your legs, heart and venous circulation, etc.) Swimming and cycling are also very recommendable, since the muscular activity of the legs helps the stuck blood return to a correct circulation, plus it is the best thing to drive blood towards the heart.

Hydrotherapy: This name is generally used to refer to different therapeutic methods that consist in the external application of water to the body through various procedures, such as hot and cold baths or showers, hydro massages, sitz baths, etc. hydrotherapy contributes to good blood circulation and stimulates the immune system.

Massages: The purpose of massages in the treatment of varicose veins is relaxation. Massaging the affected area right after having a bath or taking a shower is highly beneficial because they help improving circulation and eliminate toxins. It is recommendable to start with the feet and then little by little, up towards the thighs. The massages performed by trained staff can help to eliminate varicose veins. Massages increase skin temperature in 2-3º C and activate blood circulation because they apply pressure and empty the venous wall. The effect is noted both on superficial and deep veins, depepending on the intensity of the massage.

A healthy diet: You must have a balanced, high fiber diet. A good diet is essential to prevent varicose veins. In general, you must avoid using too much salt, eating too much canned food, cold meat and saturated fat (butter, cream, bacon, pastries and pre-cooked food). You must eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. A diet with a high content of Vitamin B, which can be found in cereals, wheat germ and animal fat free helps prevent circulatory problems. You should avoid smoking and drinking alcohol as well.

Elevate your legs: It is highly recommended to elevate your legs whenever possible so the stuck blood can be drained. Remember that varicose veins are nothing but weakened veins that no longer have the strength to return blood to the heart. You have to lie with your legs up a few minutes every day, resting your feet on a table or chair for instance, keeping your legs above the level of our hips to balance gravity. Half an hour a day is enough (preferably at noon). It is also advisable to sleep with your legs slightly raised (with the help of a cushion or small pillow under your feet) and to sleep on your left side.
